At the request of Milla Club, JJ Jones created SAME OLD SONG during a residency at Villa Waldberta, an international artist’s residency program of the Kulturreferrat in Munich. The concept was an instant hit, with the inaugural song being Led Zeppelin’s classic Stairway to Heaven. In curating the show, Jones invites musicians and bands with widely diverse styles, from Rockabilly to classical chamber music, electronic to karaoke. The song is deconstructed and reconstructed, allowing the audience to enjoy a much-loved (and sometimes oft-hated) song in whole new ways.

Künstler is what we like to call them in German – those who make the art. They are the generous and inventive spirits who make Same Old Song possible, lending their creative gifts to the community for a night of serious silliness and experimental musicality. One of the great results of the project has been the joy with which the artists offer their interpretations, many of which are first-time collaborations.
At least 218* artists have been involved so far in interpreting the Same Old Song shows. The number at the end indicates which episode(s) they have participated in.

FIRST BUT NOT LEAST: One of the most important aspects of our shows is the sound technician! In our case, one man has been responsible for setting up, checking sound, and running the board for the show. Hurray and thanks to Samuel Dalferth of Milla Club Munich…. and then came Nils Beck! We are growing, and we need a stage manager. Nils is amazing when it comes to setting up for the next group so that Sam can work the board.
A very special thanks to our house DJ, the brilliant Der Kaiser von Doo Dah, who plays the weirdest and most wonderful, danceable covers of any DJ I know.

The Songs
Once upon a time, there was no recorded music. But then, suddenly, the world was dominated by pop radio. We grew to love so many songs, and then we grew to hate them. Now we might love them again, but we won’t admit it. The best way to secretly enjoy the songs we’ve grown to hate is to listen to endless live interpretations of them together with a group of close friends. It really works!
Choosing a song for SAME OLD SONG is never easy. The song needs the right mix of memorable melody and the proper percentage of people who never want to hear the tune again for the rest of their lives.
Upon selecting “99 Luftballons,” for example, most of the German musicians I consulted with begged me not to take that song. It was boring, musically unsophisticated, childish, from the 80s, and so on. But 14 bands showed up to offer an incredible variety of interpretations and everyone had a great time rediscovering a song they thought they despised. SUCCESS!!
Among the songs I hope NEVER to select:
Summertime
Yesterday
New York, New York
